MEANING AND DEFINITION OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Hey !

I have found that, in the mercantile environments most of the general people, universities in their papers, as well as the professionals during the job requirement process keeps on asking :

What is project management? .....Can you define Project management ?.... What do you really know about the project management ?

After going through this blog, i can assure that you can get sufficient knowledge to be answerable.

Project management is a strategy as well as a methodology of the management.
Project management  deals with the management of entire project(for meaning and definition of project).

Project management is a system approach, which is required for completion of project effectively through:

  • Appropriate assignments of the project (assigning the responsibility and accountability) to a project manager from inception to completion.
  • Effective coordination within the functional lines.
  • Proper utilization of planning and control tools
  • Using right resources in right way, within the limitation of time, cost and quality.
Opinions regarding project management :

According to Harold Kerzner :

“Project management is the planning, organizing, directing and controlling of company resources to complete specific goals and objectives.”

According to Project Management Institute of USA:

“Project management is the art of directing and coordinating human and non-human resources throughout the life of the project by using modern management techniques to achieve predetermined objectives of scope, cost, time, quality and participant satisfaction”

In simple words,

we can say that, project management is the use of :
  • Knowledge
  • Experiences
  • Skills
  • Opportunities
  • Threats
  • Resources (financial resources and non financial resources)
  • Methods
  • Strategy
  • Reactions (proactive or reactive)
  • Analysis
  • Tools and
  • Techniques
-to the project, for completing it within their limitation of time, cost and quality.

Therefore, Project management is a task of getting project activities done on time, within the specified budget wit the help of project team members by adapting the environmental forces. It is an alternative approach to the traditional management. It helps to focus upon delivering more value than the cost. This principle is technically referred as 'Lean Project Management'.

As we know all the projects are unique with specific objectives and fixed life span. So, for different kinds of projects, the project managers uses different kinds of project management tactics as well as strategy. The information technology has made a revolutionary change in project management field by providing technical assets and technical services. It has focused in attaining the objectives of projects despite of time, cost and quality constraints.

There are several international standards that provides a guide to project management. some of them are as follows :
  • ISO 21500 : 2012 (First ISO to provide guidance on project management )
  • ISO 31000 : 2009 (Focusing upon the risk factors )
  • GAPPS (also known as 'Global Alliance for Project Performance Standards', focusing upon competencies of the projects as well as project managers ) and so on
