PROJECT MANAGEMENT Vs TRADITIONAL MANAGEMENT

Hi!

Today, let us know about the differences between the two following management concepts, that are project management concepts and traditional management’s concepts. This differences will let you use the appropriate concepts at appropriate place.

Generally, the students are told to differentiate between these two managements concept under different universities exams. But, the students limits it to very few points. This is possible only because the students just mug-up without understanding the concepts.

Due to this, I have tried very simplified approach to make you clear regarding this topic.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT :

I have written a separate blog for this topic. please read it, from the following link :https://managementknowledges.blogspot.com/2016/12/project-management.html

TRADITIONAL MANAGEMENT :

Traditional management comprises of the hierarchy of employees where we can find generally three level of management:
  • Low level of management
  • Middle level of management and
  • High level of management .
In the traditional management system, the managers sets the targeted role and responsibilities towards the employees. Only he receives the rewards and punishment for the outcomes.

Traditional management can be seen in the military, some government and non governmental organizations.  The management don't care about the growth of their employees. They just focus upon the end results or targeted results.  So, the results seems to be clear that even the employees working under the traditional management don't have sympathy or respect for their boss by their heart. The leaders follows military style of leadership. Therefore, most of the employees works due to 'Fear and Punishment' of their boss.

Here, we can easily find downward communication between the managers and workers. The managers follows 'you concept' rather than following 'we concept'. The Bosses always tries to dominate their sub-ordinates.

This kind of managers communicates with the staff member only if required. Therefore the traditional management work environment just makes the employees and workers :

PROJECT MANAGEMENT Vs TRADITIONAL MANAGEMENT

In Oder to make the concept more clear, i have made the comparative study between project management and traditional management.

The differences between Project Management and Traditional Management are as follows:
  • Project management uses matrix model of managerial style. Whereas, traditional management uses pyramid structure of management style.
  • The work style of project managers are multipurpose that is to say, equal responsibilities are allotted to the members of the team. Whereas, the work style of traditional managers flows in the pyramid structure. So, managers may be responsible for the works of the employees.
  • Project Management has Changeable organizational structure. Whereas, traditional management has fixed and continuous organizational structure.
  • Project Management has double boss system of leadership style. Whereas, traditional management has Single boss system leadership style.
  • In Project Management, we can find, disunity in command. It means that the command can flow from any hierarchical level. Whereas, in traditional management we can find unity in command. It means that the command flows through the structured level of management.
  • The authority and responsibility in Project management is decentralized. It means that the work is delegated to all. Whereas, the authority and responsibility in traditional management is centralized. It means that the specified work is delegated to the specified employees.
  • The decision making under project management is feasible as per the circumstance. Whereas, the decision making under traditional management is not feasible. It is like military style.
  • Project management has multi-channel system interrelationships and coordination. This flows from: Top level to middle level and top level to subordinate level. Whereas, traditional management has pyramid style of interrelationship and coordination. This flows from: Top level to sub-ordinate level only.
  • In project management the time and resources are limited and fixed. Whereas, in traditional management the time and resources are not fixed. They are flexible in nature.
  • Project managers are generally result oriented. Whereas, traditional managers are generally task oriented.
